Grambling Legends Sports Hall of Fame 2022

Pro Hall of Famers are everyone who has made it to professional levels from Grambling State University

Shiakiea “Skeet” Carter

Basketball 2022 Inductee

Shiakiea “Skeet” Carter helped the Lady Tigers
win the ‘96, ‘97 and ‘98 SWAC Championships, was
named SWAC 1st team in ’96, SWAC Defensive Player of
the Year in ‘97 and ‘98, SWAC Tournament 1st Team in
‘96 and ‘97, SWAC Tournament MVP in ‘97 and ‘98, and
was ranked #12 in All-Time steals in NCAA Div. I, #2
in GSU assists, #3 in blocked shots, #2 in steals, #10
in rebounds, and #10 in points scored.


Clemente “Lemon” Gordon

Football & 2022 Inductee

Clemente “Lemon” Gordon was named All-SWAC
in ‘88 and ‘89, Offensive Player of the Year in ‘89, led
the Tigers to the SWAC title in ‘89, was named MVP of
the Bayou Classic and LA Classic, MVP of the ‘90
Freedom Bowl All Star Classic, was drafted in the 11th
round by the Cleveland Browns in ‘90, and played for
the Cleveland Browns and Dallas Cowboys.


James “Hamp” Hammond

Baseball & 2022 Inductee

James “Hamp” Hammond was named to the All-
SWAC Team, lettered three years in baseball, was named

Captain in his senior year, led the Tigers in batting with
a .323 average, played three outfield positions: first
baseman and pitcher, was selected as starting pitcher
for the NAIA National Tournament, and is a retired
Education Administrator.


Conrad “Hutch” Hutchinson, Jr.*

Band & 2022 Inductee

Conrad “Hutch” Hutchinson, Jr.* was selected
in ‘52 as the 4th Grambling Band Director, ‘64 to perform
at the AFL Championship game, directed the “World
Famed” in professional stadiums in the country, secured
international performance opportunities in Africa and
Japan, wrote the GSU Fight Song, and initiated the use
of the organ as a part of the halftime performance.


Andrew “Jack” Jackson

Football & 2022 Inductee

Andrew “Jack” Jackson played Offensive Guard,
was named team captain, All-American in ‘73 and ‘74,
played in the World Football League, and helped to
establish the Birmingham Pipeline to Grambling.


Joseph “Pepper” Jones

Basketball & 2022 Inductee

Joseph “Pepper” Jones won the Willis Reed Award
in ‘72, helped the team to win the SWAC Championship
in ‘75, was selected to play in the first LABC All-Star
Game and in the 6th round draft in ‘76 by the New York
Knicks, coached four state championship teams, and
inducted into Iberville High School Hall of Fame.


Joseph “The Pro” Simpson

Basketball & 2022 Inductee

Joseph “The Pro” Simpson was named the first
“Blue Chipper” in the country, averaged 18 points per
game, helped to win the SWAC Championships in ‘72 and
‘73, was named to the All-SWAC first team in his senior
year, and serves as a motivational speaker.


Yolande “Ishmae” Smal

Track & 2022 Inductee

Yolande “Ishmae” Small participated as an
international track competitor in Jamaica, Barbados,
Cuba, Australia, and Venezuela, competed in the 200m,
400m, 800m, 4x400 relay, 1600 relay and the 4x800
relay, received Top-winner honors in the PanAm Games,
Drake Relays, NCAA relays, SWAC indoor, outdoor, and
cross-country events, honored as Drake Relay Champion
in ‘84, participated on the 4x400 relay team ranked #2
in the US. participated on the outdoor 1600m relay team
that beat Texas A &M, the #1 team in the nation.


Robert “Mule” Taylor, Jr.

Football & 2022 Inductee

Robert “Mule” Taylor, Jr. helped GSU win the
SWAC Championship in ‘00 and ‘01, was named 1st team
1-AA All-American by AFCA in ‘01, All SWAC linebacker
in ‘00 and ‘01, 2nd team AP All-American linebacker, and
serves as Defensive Coordinator/linebacker coach at
Parker High School.


Rodney Tureaud

Football & 2022 Inductee

Rodney Tureaud played in the inaugural Pelican
Bowl. Helped to secure the ‘72 Black College Football
National Championship. Selected as the SWAC ‘Offensive
Player of the Year in ’72 Named Football All-American.
Retired from US Bureau of Immigration and Customs
Enforcement.


Juan “Zeak” Watkins

Baseball & 2022 Inductee

Juan “Zeak” Watkins participated as a four-year
starter at GSU. Played left field, center field and pitcher.
Helped Tigers win the SWAC Championship in 84 and 85.
Named to the All-SWAC Team. Consistently hit
above .300 during his 4 years, ’84-87.
