Jesse O'Neal

FOOTBALL & 2023 Inductee

Crowley, Louisiana, and Crowley High School sent Jesse O’Neal to Grambling State University. As a 6’4”, 265lb. defensive end, he came prepared to play. His background as a member of the high school All-District Football Team in 1970, a AAA All-State Team Selection in 1970, an All-Acadiana Defensive Football Team member in 1971, selected for the High School All-Star team in 1971, and named an Outstanding Trackman in the Shot Put in 1971 putting him in place for play at the next level. Additionally, little was known about him playing Sousaphone in the High School Concert Band.

O'Neal was sought after by many football programs in the country. Jesse was already one of the most impressive specimens to begin playing college football, as his skills were already developing in the manner any coach would have wanted. He was big but could move quickly. Jesse was not shy about his role on the gridiron. Some observers called him the "he-cat of a tiger-cat line." Beefed-out standing 6’4” and weighing 265 pounds in his stocking feet-he had the ranginess, quickness, and lateral mobility that made him the bulwark of a defense line that had consistently been one of the finest in the country. He was also viewed as a keg of dynamite in the man-mountain Grambling front wall where he was a tireless, indestructible giant. He was a mountain of menace in the Grambling "front-four" (including Gary Johnson, Robert Barber and Ezil Bibbs) whose goal-line and other last-ditch stands would weekly earn them top billing with their outstanding offense. He consistently spoiled the enemy’s rushing efforts with his aggressive play and leadership ability. Opposing Rival backs labeled him as an amazing immovable object. He presented a formidable obstacle with his size, but it is a fine contempt for life and limb that made him the focus of headline attention. He had an inexhaustible capacity for hard work and making quarterbacks extremely and overwhelmingly unhappy.

Jesse inspired constant panic in the enemy backfield for four seasons. His stalwartness and never-budge spirit are two of the many reasons why Coach Eddie Robinson ranked the "front four" with any collegiate defensive unit in the country. Tireless and indestructible, Jesse had an unlimited capacity for hard work and specialized in discouraging breakthroughs. His personal contempt for opponents’ life and limb, plus an almost “psychopathic” desire to get quarterbacks, earned him headline attention. He was instrumental in helping the Tigers to win consecutive SWAC Championships and three National Black College Championships. Jesse graduated with a degree in Industrial Arts Education from Grambling State University.

O’Neal was drafted in the 6th round by Houston. He then went to the Seattle Seahawks and on to the Canadian Football League where he played with the Saskatchewan Roughriders, the British Columbia Lions, and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. He was instrumental in the Roughriders winning the 64th Gray Cup Championship in 1976.

After leaving the professional ranks, Jesse has had a variety of life experiences. He has served as a Personal Trainer, an Aircraft Mechanic for Boeing Inc., A Safety Engineer for Aetna, and is currently a Massage Therapist. He has been a Certified Gerontological Advocate in Galveston County, A food Pantry Coordinator/Supervisor for the Liaison for the True Living Word in LaMarque, Texas and the Greater Barbous Church in Texas City, Texas. He is a 400 Fella Ship Member for the Word of Restoration International church in Rosharon, Texas. Little did we know, but we have an actor in our ranks. He made a cameo appearance in the movie, “The Fire Next Time” in 1992 by RHI Entertainment and was the lead actor in a local commercial for a New Iberia Chiropractor Office in 1993. Not to forget his educational background, he served as a permanent substitute at his alma mater, Crowley High School for four years.

Jesse is the proud father of Jarvis, Jared, Jessica, Jesse, Jr., and Sherman, and lives in Dickinson, Texas.

Andre’s unwavering dedication extended beyond the field. His true passion lies in shaping young men for success in society. Following his retirement from coaching, Andre embarked on a fulfilling role in the Mentor Dropout Recovery Program, contributing to the City of Birmingham. While prioritizing his role as a devoted father to his son Torrey, Andre continues to make a meaningful impact through his involvement as a member of the esteemed Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated.

James Thompson

BASEBALL & 2023 Inductee
James Thompson, a true force in the realm of sports hailing from Evan E. Worthing High School in Houston, Texas, has left an indelible mark with his athletic prowess. This young prodigy showcased his talents as a pitcher and first baseman, garnering a varsity letter for two consecutive years while serving as team captain and earning the coveted All-District selection. The stage was set for James' meteoric rise to greatness, as his dedication and natural abilities shone brightly, guiding him towards a destined path. And so, he ventured forth to Grambling State University.

Throughout his collegiate years at Grambling State University, James Thompson proved himself to be an unwavering beacon of commitment to the sport of baseball. His exceptional talent and work ethic propelled him to new heights, as he secured a spot on the varsity team for all four years, assuming the role of team captain and being honored with All-SWAC accolades. Unprecedented success became his norm, both individually and as an integral part of the baseball team. In fact, he holds records for the most saves and appearances in a season, as well as the most saves in a career at GSU. Balancing the demands of being a student-athlete, James not only conquered both realms but also emerged triumphantly with a degree in Business Marketing.

Upon bidding farewell to Grambling, James embarked on a new chapter by joining the Houston, Texas Fire Department, where he faithfully served as an Engineer Operator and EMT for an admirable span of thirty years. His love for sports never waned, as he found solace and camaraderie within the Firefighters softball team, triumphantly clinching the National championship in 2000. James' coaching prowess also shone through, leading the First Colony Little League All-Star team in 2005 and serving as a coach for the East Houston Twins, who claimed victory in the Texas Teenage Baseball Championship. Notably, that very team nurtured the talents of Jason Bourgeois, Michael Bourne, and Carl Crawford, all of whom would go on to play in the MLB. Additionally, he assumed the role of an MLB Scout for the San Diego Padres, providing invaluable insights to the GSU baseball staff on Houston's emerging players—thirty of whom blossomed into All-SWAC athletes, SWAC Champions, and even professional players.

In the realm of youth sports, James Thompson's contributions have been nothing short of exceptional. He currently serves as the Athletic Director for the Fort Bend Youth Football League and lends his expertise to the Fort Bend ISD Athletics Department for various sporting events. Not content with just sharing his knowledge, James provides baseball lessons encompassing hitting, pitching, and fielding to aspiring youths in his community. His commitment to service transcends age boundaries, as he selflessly dedicates his time to the senior residents through the Fort Bend Meals on Wheels program and even takes up the role of a part-time crossing guard at a local elementary school. Such unwavering devotion to the betterment of his community earned James the esteemed title of Distinguished Father in 2012, awarded by the local chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. Furthermore, he actively engages with organizations such as the Black Fire Fighters Association and the International Association of Fire Fighters, solidifying his commitment to making a positive impact. As a Life Member of The Grambling University National Alumni Association, he proudly is an integral part of the Douglas L. Williams Chapter.

James Thompson's impact extends far beyond his remarkable athletic achievements. Upon retirement, after 30 years as an Engineer/Operator for the City of Houston Fire Department, the department placed his name on the new fire engine, because of his safe driving record, care of his crew and his devoted professionalism. He has become a living embodiment of the values cherished by Grambling State University—an exceptional ambassador for the institution. Through his unwavering integrity, relentless perseverance, and unyielding determination, he has exemplified the very essence of what GSU holds dear. James and wife Regina are the doting parents of Jalen and Jasmin, and reside in Missouri City, Texas.
